long overdue but we move
One P has done me a great service by recommending a movie I was pleasantly surprised by. He said there was yearning... err not the type I was expecting but sure it was present. He said there were cool action scenes and BOY WERE THERE! I am not well-versed in action movies but I know a well-choreographed and well-executed fight scene when I see one!
What he failed to mention was time fkcery (sorry D)! I LOLOLOLOVE anything to do with time, space, and dimension doozies! Time travel, time loops, isekai, transmigration, world-hopping, verse-jumping, unlimited flow, as long as it bends reality, me likey.
(เน>◡<เน)
Quick note, my seafarer site was acting up so I spent like 5 minutes on this movie about a basketball player wanting to fly...? And there were pigeons... really confusing but its part of the lore now.
You know that term they throw around for when a show (inevitably) delves into time travel stuff well into the very end of its run time? Jumping the shark? Whatever the opposite of that is, I resonate with. More like jumping on a lifeboat and setting sail to the most whimsical place you can think of! There are so many concepts you can explore with destroying the constructs of a linear reality, and trust whatever it may be, I will eat it up!

So imagine my astonishment when main girl, Rita, was at death's door and boom! hard cut to a sequence I've already seen play out. Scrumptious, if I was in the theater watching I'd be annoying. After the first few loops comes a montage of her trying to make sense of whatevers going on on that day which was somewhat inspirational. But for goodness sake I hope she starts eating full meals regularly cuz it was a chore to see someone else operate with the same stamina as I.
Rita
I see the time loop as an effective plot device to portray the struggles of breaking through old (and possibly bad) habits. In psychology there's a concept called reinforcement and its influenced by biological and external factors. Rita's familiarity with living life in perpetual isolation and the abuse she suffered by her mom are primary reinforcers that keep her from connecting with other people. She in turn looks to the external world, for something to change, in the hopes that she might also see hope.
Relate with a capital R, I too very often anticipate change from the world so that my monkey brain is stimulated to do better. Anything would suffice: a spontaneous trip, a dumbdroid, ace attorney 7. Something to get me out of my comfort zone and create or experience what it felt like to be alive. But with every day being one and the same from how I never actually did anything to change, the indifference and demotivation stacked until I had no choice but to act on it.
Rita's journey through the movie mirrors the same experience of living every day without real motivation. But because the stakes are higher and the repetition is more literal, she learns that real change starts from within and only she can change "her" world, or at least her perception of it.

Love this quote, very true and very relevant. Very useful too. Hopefully a time loop happens to me soon otherwise I not getting out of this slump.
Keiji
This guy is not bad I guess. I agree with P in regards to his reveal. I assume that would've been how it felt like if I Rocky from phm wasn't so marketable.
He's the sunshine lollipop needed to balance Rita out. Maybe too much of a pushover? But his brains made up for it. No seriously, how is he capable of so much at 18? The world had only gone to shit for a year, and he learned allat within that timeframe? All questions are probably answered in the manga, but I don't have the energy to look it up rn I will stay ignorant.

| he's actually such a cutieeee |
Oh oh the moment this guy uttered a sound, I just knew something was up. The first thing that came to mind was shounen main character. It was that sort of vibrato yk? So I put my research skills to work and voila!
Keiji fits perfectly here actually. Guy who's too good for the world has to face harsh life experiences but remains kind despite it all. I guess Natsuke Hanae just has that compassionate voice. Keiji's place in the story and his role as Rita's "partner" reminded me of Waymond from EEAO. Same archetype as above: man who fights with kindness against a cruel world. I like that. I've always liked seeing that portrayal in media. Also cuz usually they come with a kickass female counterpart. LOVE!!!
It's not all sunshines and rainbows though cuz Keiji did trigger me at one point. Whether that cancels out everything good about him, you, dear readers, can decide. He said "you're my superhero" to Rita EWW EWWWW YUVK bro this isn't mha what are you on. Also, why even attempt to reheat mike wheeler nachos when yk how that ended.
Plot & World
I understand this is a character-focus movie with the apocalypse in the background but I would've loved to see more of the world and how the rest of Earth are doing. Rita and Keiji are stationed at these facility things where they "volunteer" to do manual labour near Darol (prolly for research purposes? though recreation wouldn't be impossible). The widest scope we get of this world is confined to the news reports (more accurately, one that plays over and over) and glimpses of when Rita successfully makes it far enough. But all of those are miniscule in the grand scheme of things.
Again, all gripes about plot related stuff are probably explored in the manga should I should just stop right here lest I look foolish (sorry Ming). So now that I've run out of things to say, enjoy the unfiltered reactions as I was watching this movie:
• COLOURS! • These are real pigeons what going on • Wrong movie but we move • Got stuck watching a basketball player wanting to fly or smth I hope this is relevant to the actual movie it would be so funny pls • Big alien thing's name is homophone to my nemesis I hate it already! • Monster demogorgon esque wth • OMG USE OF COLOURS WAONDERFUL • Time loop? • Whatever they're doing to the alien thing is reminding me of mystery flesh pit national park. Human greed to take tak take from nature • Love it when everything matters and pays off • Yearning for survival is still yearning • Maybe she should eat a meal, she should learn her lesson by now • They drive on the left side in japan,? • This backstory wtf • OHHHH opening line makes sense now • Anime gore is sooo
*break for the soul*
• Girl eat a proper meal!!! • I really think she just has to eat proper nutrients • She's doing all this training but her body in each timeline don't remember.. • "I need a better weapon" NO YOU NEED TO EAT PLS • This like the earth is online but less whimsy • Im a timeline where a giant alien tree has habitated the earth I would believe that someone has time travelled • OMG A NAKAMA!! • Awww finally a kindred spirit • I FREAKI G KNEW IT THAT VOICE IS KAMADO TANJIIIIROOOOOOO • aww hero! Mha reference • "As a man" yes that should be the standard. • He so cute awww this dynamic is adorbs • I fell for heteronormativity... it happens. They are adorable • Total coincidence but because they are the way they are, it works. If she was weak, useless. If he was incompetent, useless. • They make a good team!!! • Evelyn and waymond relationship type shit • This guy is boyfriend material, APPROVE • THEY WORS SO WELL TORHTHRR • Man calls woman superhero and I SEETH

I didn't mention because the first 10-15 mins were building to time fuckery, and I went in blind, so I recommended it in a way you could enter as blindly as I.
ReplyDeleteokay so recommend more time travel content to you, sweet. I got a few :P
yeah you go girl!!! go eat meals!
yeah i loved the scene where she gets lowkey pissed nothing changed despite the horrors. I really resonate with that, and the moral of the story is rarely potrayed in this manner, which I LOVED. I lived a long time waiting for the people around me to change instead of changing it myself, too.
y-you're.... my superhero! heh......um...awkward.............sorry.........
love the break for the soul
love the turn from "awwhh adorable boyfriend material!" to "GROSS CALLING HER SUPERHERO" are you misogynistic and misandrist? all women... are super....
You honestly liked this movie than I did, but did you NEARLY tear up at the end?
actually really good to get recommendations from real life humans without tags and trigger warnings, this is why we watch movies!
DeleteMORE TIME TRAVEL GIVE IT.

jax jumping out once again almost like...
idk man there are momentary instances when I feel appreciation for men but it quickly gets overshadowed by the next dumb thing they do.
¯\_(ใ)_/¯
Only cried in the middle, not the end <3
